In this episode of the Recruiting Daily Podcast, William Tincup interviews Kiran Snyder, CEO and founder of Textio, about the future of HR tech and its relationship with chat GPT. Textio is a software that helps people write inclusive job posts, recruiting mail, and performance feedback by optimizing their content for inclusion. It goes beyond spelling and grammar and helps users see how other people might receive their writing. On the other hand, chat GPT is an app that uses GPT models to produce conversation-like experiences.

Snyder explains that ChatGPT can conduct interviews and provide automated responses to job applicants but can also be biased towards certain groups of people. Unfortunately, ChatGPT may not be able to handle sensitive conversations. Snyder suggests that HR professionals should use ChatGPT as a tool rather than a solution to their hiring problems.

Kieran Snyder on the future of HR Tech

We’ve seen people try to write job posts with ChatGPT. It’s really tempting. We’ve seen people try to write sourcing emails. ‘Hey, William, met you at this conference. Got a great role for you,’ That kind of thing. We’ve even seen people try to write higher stakes sort of feedback or performance management content. Everything

There has been all sorts of creative and functional ChatGPT uses for a recruiter’s workflow, but one slight inconvenience is the need to keep a tab open.  Not gonna lie, we’ve become pretty spoiled with technology.  But, now us whiny drama queens can ramp up the convenience factor to eleven by having ChatGPT always accessible as a chrome extension. The Halist AI ChatGPT Browser Extensions is a juicy way to keep your little robot helper along for the ride.

If you’re looking for some long winded write-up about this chrome extension’s bountiful features, you won’t find much here.  It’s pretty much just going to save you a tab and some hassle.  It also keeps a record of your recent searches, so feel free to minimize the window once it finishes its search.

One frustrating drawback, despite its convenience, is the inability to close the window mid-search.  The ChatGPT browser extension can’t handle being ignored while it talks to you.  So, if you want to keep your little AI buddy happy as a clam, keep the tiny window open whilst it chirps out an answer.

AI can help recruiters with Boolean, write email copy, find trends in data, and even write love stories…And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This new world of intelligence assisted work we live in is quite interesting, and this feels like just the beginning.

If you have any uses for ChatGPT that you think breaks the norm, feel free to comment on them below! We love talking geek.

Happy Hunting!

Today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast has special guest Art Zeile, the CEO of DHI Group.  He’s bringing up important topics about tech hiring trends and how we can get ahead of the game.

Hiring has evolved so much in the past few years, and 2023 is no different. Art has unique insight into what to expect in this current environment, and what tech hiring trends are important to keep in mind.  From large tech firm hiring behaviors to valuing soft skills, we’re going through the entire list.  Be prepared, 2023 is a hiring battlefield and we need all the tools we can get to survive this melee.

Art Zeile on Tech Hiring Trends:

One of the famous statistics that came out over the last couple weeks is that Meta actually hired three times as many people last year as they laid off in the last quarter of the year.

You want somebody empathetic, it says something about your culture. By adding to the soft skills and adding dimensions to your culture, you are telling the candidate what kind of a company you are and what kind of values are important to you.”

We all want to do cold outreach easier. Nobody wants to spend hours hunting down the perfect candidate when you can just cold blast 1000 developers some outreach and see who nibbles. That’s where this dirty trick comes into play. Mastering the tools of the trade is vital for any career, and when it comes to Xray, sourcing is no different. So, what’s this big mysterious technique to source developer emails?

It’s nothing too crazy. However, we are combining it with an interesting Chrome extension.  The gist of it is to create a fairly simple Google Xray string phrased like this:

site:github.com language:java AND “@gmail.com”

Like we said, nothing too crazy.

The fun part is when you add in this pretty neat Chrome Extension called Email Extractor. If you’re trying to speed up your headhunting, this puppy is a great tool to have in your belt. It will automatically comb through whatever page you are on and return all of the email addresses on screen. Neat, right?

A little nuance with Google is that it usually doesn’t show everything all at once, it drip feeds search results in small batches. Annoying. But, we have technology. To display all of the content on a Google page faster, you can take an extra step and add uAutoPagerize to your Chrome browser. That will automatically display all “unloaded” content. Now, when you click on Email Extractor it should have way more results. Booya.

Take this more as a building block than a step by step guide.  Be creative with your Boolean strings so you can get results that are different from other people. The more refined your search, the more likely you’re going to source developer emails that haven’t been bothered into oblivion.

Happy hunting!

Organizations have had to redefine what their workplace experience means. With these recent changes, adoption accelerators seem to be one of the ways that companies can help their employees adapt to their new way of work.

Adoption accelerators are tools and support techniques that help facilitate change enablement programs to drive employee adoption in organizations.

Company needs often change, and your workforce needs will also change in turn. But, with certain adoption styles and support programs you can make these transitions more seamless for your workers.

Nancy Estell-Zoder on Adoption Accelerators:

“We’ve seen great opportunity with our adoption accelerators. The intent is to simplify that process. Recognize that there are easy ways to gain value, and focus on the critical problem that you’re trying to solve.”

The impact AI has had in the recruiting industry is getting ridiculous. With AI curating lists of potential hires and recruiting emails being crafted by AI, you have to ask…was this article written by a computer? Who even knows anymore. But one of the fantastic things about technologies like these: they can get even better. Now, spoken word queries can be saved, reused, and easily modified with the official ChatGPT Chrome Extension.

If you’re having trouble generating email copy for your recruiting sends, then look no further. This extension adds a zillion different pre-built options for generating content, but luckily it has some email options in there as well. Furthermore, you can customize and tailor exactly what you want the AI to produce if whatever template you’re using isn’t exactly to your liking.

the ChatGPT Chrome extension has a few other neat features. You can tailor the list to your liking with the favorites section, so you can at-a-glance get access to your most frequently used options. However, there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to generating content. It uses tags and other features to allow you to make sure it generates unique content every time. There’s forums, FAQ’s, and all sorts of resources so you can fully take advantage of these features.

Give it a try! If you put a little effort into making your own curated prompts you could save yourself countless hours of work.

When it comes to software developers, GitHub is the holy grail of geeks. Everyone who’s anyone is on this platform, and a site you probably frequent if you’re hiring a computer wiz. Want a way to check these developer’s GitHub activity? Then here’s the sauce.

GitHub makes it somewhat straightforward to tell user activity, but there’s a better way. With OSS Insight, you have a clean one page dashboard of all the recent repo updates, pulls and pushes, and everything else in-between. This makes chugging through developer’s GitHub activity extremely painless, to the point where you can tell within seconds just how active this coder is.

There are some other niche features like GPT powered data exploration. It lets you request data in natural language and spits out a very intelligent answer. It can even generate SQL from the dataset. If you have a detailed enough request, you could use this to headhunt active developers in a specific field. The search feature is VERY powerful, give it a try.

You can also explore trending data. If you want to see what sort of code is hot right now, it’s a great place to start. It tracks all sorts of metrics on GitHub, far more than the average person might need.

This tool has a myriad of uses, we really recommend you take a look and see if it’s something you can add to your workflow.

With AI reaching new heights in conversational prowess, written language, and even art…it’s no surprise that using ChatGPT for Boolean is quite effective. And, it can do it well. The power of AI is reaching such great heights that we have to ask: how much longer until the AI powered friend for us antisocial sourcers??

Having your own smart little monster to boss around can get pretty addicting. ChatGPT‘s ability to interpret even the loosest of commands is quite fascinating.  You could ask it something along the lines of “write boolean for finding software engineers in denver, co” and it will fill in the rest. It’s quite capable at handling more complex commands as well, with a few caveats.

It doesn’t know all of the industry terminology, like for example it has no idea what it means to Xray. But, you can say site search or something coloquial and it can handle that just fine. There are some nuances like that, but you can pretty much “spoken language” your way through the entire string.

Have fun using ChatGPT for boolean, and let us know what works or what doesn’t. While recruiters and sourcers won’t be replaced any time soon, we all are feeling some strong winds of change blowing. We’re sure the world is going to be seeing a lot more of this technology…for better or for worse.

In this strange world of machine learning, we now have the ability to find oceans of candidates across multiple pools through social media filtration and competent AI development.  With huge strides in sourcing AI made by platforms like Talenya, the gap between a recruiter’s intuition and a computer’s best guess is narrowing.

It’s only a matter of time before these machines redefine the standard for how we source candidates. With how these technologies are looking, we might even already be there.

The post Should You Screen Applicant Social Media Profiles? appeared first on RecruitingDaily.

]]>
Companies hiring are always looking for a way to get an edge on the competition. One of the best ways to do this is by screening applicants’ social media profiles before extending them an offer, but some question whether they should be doing it. In short, they should — but not without considering the risks involved first.

The Pros of Screening Applicants on Social Media

Below are the benefits of screening applicants on social media.

Provides You With a Direct Link to Contact Candidates

Hiring isn’t always easy. You have to sift through hundreds of applications, and sometimes it can seem like there are too many qualified candidates.

However, social media gives HR reps a way to find out more about applicants. Once you’ve found someone who looks like a good fit, you can reach out to them directly on social media. This works best since it allows both parties to get to know each other better before making any commitments.

Identifies Qualified Candidates

If you’re only looking at resumes from people with a certain level of education or experience, it’s easy to miss out on someone who doesn’t fit that profile but could still be an excellent fit. By including social media as part of your screening process, you can cast a wider net and potentially find better candidates than would have been available otherwise.

Saves Time and Money

When deciding if an applicant is right for your business, social media can help you quickly get a sense of who they are, what they’re about and how well they will fit in with your team. It can also save you money by preventing errors in recruitment. When using traditional methods like resumes and interviews, you have to pay for each step of the process. With social media screening, it’s all done online — providing you with more freedom and flexibility at no cost to you.

The Cons of Screening Applicants on Social Media

Here are the drawbacks to consider when screening candidates on social media.

Unreliable Source of Information

Screening applicants’ profiles can be risky as it can be challenging to determine whether they are qualified for the role. Though social media gives you some insight into their personality and character, some people post about themselves in a way that can be deceiving. Even if they’re being honest, there’s always a possibility they’ve chosen to share something that doesn’t represent their overall personality or work ethic.

It Can Be Unethical

Screening applicants on social media can be unethical in various ways. For one, it may violate their privacy rights, especially if employers ask candidates for login credentials. This is against the law in over 20 states today.

Secondly, it can lead to the risk of discrimination. Any applicant can claim you saw information that shows their ethnicity, religion and private information — and they can claim you used that to make a final decision and launch a lawsuit.

May Increase Bias

Bias can occur when an employer screens an applicant for specific qualities, but their social media profile misrepresents their personality and information. During the screening process, this may lead the employer to make a swift decision about the applicant.

For example, an employer might look at a candidate’s Instagram profile and see they have posted pictures of themselves drinking alcohol or partying with friends. The employer may think this person would not fit in with their company culture or disrupt office harmony. If this kind of screening occurs regularly in an organization, it can tread the thin line between protecting company culture on the one hand and bias against people who are not like-minded or those with different lifestyles on the other.

What to Look for on Potential Candidates’ Social Media Profiles

If you are interested in screening applicants’ social media profiles correctly, consider implementing these tips below.

1. A Strong Network of Connections and Followers

Looking for applicants on social media with a strong network of connections is crucial because they are likelier to be honest, hard-working and trustworthy. When looking at the people in an applicant’s network, you can see the type of person they are, their interests and how they live. If you check their network, you can tell if they may be the right fit for the organization because it gives you an idea of who they like to interact with online.

2. An Active and Professional Presence

Suppose a candidate has a professional presence on social media. This will tell you much about who they are and how they fit into your company culture.

Having an active and professional presence on social media shows the person regularly engages with their community, which means they’re likely to be involved at your business. A lively social media presence can also mean they’re conscientious of their online reputation. This is important when looking for new hires who represent your organization well in public spaces like social media.

3. Questionable Content

A company’s reputation is a considerable part of its success and hiring the wrong people can have serious consequences. If you have an employee with questionable content, it can be a big mistake for your business. Even if the applicant may be good at their job, they might not be the best person to represent your organization if they’re posting inappropriate things on social media.

4. Inconsistencies Across Profiles

When looking for your next hire, looking for applicants on social media with inconsistencies across profiles is essential. These inconsistencies can help you weed out applicants with fake accounts or applicants who may try to lie about their experience. For instance, if they claim they graduated from MIT, but their LinkedIn profile says they went to a different school, this could be a red flag.

5. Evaluate the Person’s Tone and Attitude Toward Others

Evaluating an applicant’s tone is a way to assess their ability to communicate effectively, which is vital in any job. It can also reveal how well they fit in with their current team, how willing they are to take criticism, and whether or not they have an appropriate sense of humor.

If you have a candidate who seems perfect on paper but has an unprofessional attitude toward others — even if it’s over text — it may be best to pass them up. Not only will this person likely have trouble fitting in with your team, but they’ll also be hard to work with in general.

Using Social Media as a Hiring Tool

Many employers use social media to screen applicants because it can help them make better hiring decisions. Yet, while there are some ethical and legal concerns, screening social media profiles has become an accepted practice in most industries.

Of course, you’ll have to be aware that some social media profiles don’t accurately reflect the person applying for the job. Therefore, that is something to be mindful of when screening applicants’ social media profiles. Incorporate these tips into your screening strategy to make the most of recruiting people who fit within your company’s team and culture.
