Storytelling About Odyssey With Brian Keenan

Welcome to the Use Case Podcast! Today we have Brian Keenan from Odyssey, and we’ll be talking about the use case of Odyssey and why their customers stay with them. Odyssey is a software company that enables connections between employees and underrepresented candidates for partner companies.

Keenan explains that his company started as a mentoring platform, where professionals would offer 30-minute virtual slots to candidates for career journey advice or mock interviews. However, they later pivoted to building software that would allow companies to have direct connections with their employees and external candidates. This enabled companies to facilitate coffee chats, one-to-ones, and other structures to connect with candidates and create more equitable access to opportunities.

The podcast also touches on the difference between underrepresented and marginalized and how these terms are often used interchangeably. Keenan suggests looking at the core issue of some people having access to opportunities while others do not. He emphasizes that it is essential to understand the various factors that contribute to this problem, such as social and economic disparities, and work towards creating a more equitable system.

Keenan believes that technology can play a significant role in facilitating these connections and creating a more inclusive workplace.

Give the show a listen and please let me know what you think.

Samer Saab of Explorance

Welcome to the Use Case Podcast! today we have Samer Saab from  Explorance and we’ll be talking about the use case or business case for why his customers use Explorance.

Explorance is a company that provides people insight solutions to help organizations bring actionable insights driven by listening to their employees. The episode discusses the business case or use case for why Explorance’s prospects and customers use their services.

Their solutions help bring to surface understanding of employee needs, expectations, and competencies to support them throughout their journey. The two solutions offered by Explorance are called Blue and Metrics that Matter. They work in synergy to support learning, development, engagement, inclusion, and employee experience.

The podcast also touches on talent intelligence. However, TA is just is a churched-up way of saying people analytics or people insights. Saab emphasizes that companies need to start being part of the solution and not the problem by transforming data into actionable insights that lead to action recommendations.

Explorance primarily offers insight-to-action solutions by connecting the dots between what organizations already know about their employees’ behavior and what they are telling. Insights alone were enough in the past, but now organizations need to be more agile, and their teams need to be autonomous to act on the insights provided by Explorance.

Give the show a listen and please let me know what you think.

On today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast, William Tincup talks to Sherri from Businessolver about how new benefits data reveals employees’ financial preparedness.

Some Conversation Highlights:

One of them is financial preparedness and the other one is benefits literacy. And so then those two, how I often word it as those two clash together, I don’t feel financially prepared for an expense, nor do I really understand benefits.

And so therefore, sometimes I think we see people overinsure because they just purchase the most expensive plans that they can to try to cover that financial risk that they are concerned about, and they don’t really understand benefits so that they don’t know how to ask the right questions and really get the benefits that fits their needs most appropriately.

On today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast, William Tincup talks to Sanish from Legion Technologies about how the great resignation is slowing all while hourly employees remain dissatisfied.

Some Conversation Highlights:

Part B of the challenges, if you think about this whole thing from an hourly employee standpoint, employees who do these jobs, they are very motivated by very different factors. They like flexibility because many of the workers in these jobs, they may have multiple jobs, or they may be doing this on the side with maybe they have a school, they’re going to school or they may have some other commitments. So these types of scheduling and flexibility type of things are a great motivator or in many cases are a driver of attrition for hourly employees doing these jobs.

The other thing that also motivates hourly employees a lot employees that do these jobs is a better experience like communication tools, modern communication tools getting paid instantly, which is one of the newer things that’s really emerging as one of the top features. So if you combine these two things as a business, I want to accurately predict customer demand so that I can very efficiently deploy labor to meet the customer needs. But as an hourly employee, I’m looking for flexibility, I’m looking for better experience, I’m looking for getting paid as soon as my shift is over. What Legion does is it combines these two sets of value propositions together in a single platform

On today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast, William Tincup talks to Julius from MUA about turning happiness into a trackable KPI.

Some Conversation Highlights:

I think we have to step back a little bit, because let’s say happiness is really the end result of many things that happened before. If you express yourself of being happy, you probably did a lot of things right, consciously and unconsciously. But things happened before that led to that feeling, that led to this emotion. It’s how I would like to answer your question. So, I do believe there… I don’t believe that you can be happy and unproductive at the same time in the context of work.

I am throwing in another word that is fulfillment. So, we want to be fulfilled and that fulfillment leads to a place, again, that is happiness. Usually, if an employee considers himself as happy, that employee works on their strength, understands their place, feels a sense of participation and unity, and that makes them happy. All these qualities that I have listed usually lead to productivity. I don’t think I have ever seen an employee who would say, “I’m truly happy in what I’m doing, but I’m pretty bad in it,” or “I’m super unproductive.” So, my answer to your question is, I probably would disagree. I don’t think that you can be happy and unproductive at the same time.

On today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast, William Tincup talks to Courtney from Symphony about navigating remote work.

Some Conversation Highlights:

But outside of actually seeing somebody struggling with remote work, it does really come down to, it’s two things. It’s one as a leader, manager or even colleague is having those relationships, the communication over communication, which I think that was identified very early in COVID and a lot of articles and podcasts and whatnot around. Managers and leaders really embracing that and the importance of over communication.

But having those with employees, understanding what they’re working on and creating that opportunity or that line if you will, to either you or somebody on their remote work team that they’re comfortable with sharing if they’re not okay. And even though it’s a little hit to the ego, I like to recognize that I may not be that person for everybody on my team. They may not feel comfortable telling me about that they’re struggling because maybe culturally we’re a global company.

On today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast, William Tincup talks to Dan from Filtered about the relationship between tech talent and the economy.

Some Conversation Highlights:

I’m observing in larger companies, you can call it the airline industry or manufacturing or agriculture. There, they are right now working on their tech talent budgets for next year saying, “Gee, I don’t really see a decline yet, but clearly one’s coming, therefore we should really cut back our budgets by 5% or 10%. But we still got to hire those engineers because we’re transforming our company to be competitive in a global world.”

So therefore, I actually think that just like, I think you’ll remember this, in 2008 when the real estate bubble burst and there was a flight from early stage, money-losing tech talent companies to more safe, larger companies, a kind of flight to safety. So I think we’re going to observe in 2023 larger, more traditional companies who are still trying to invest in digital transformation hiring engineers, data scientists, digital marketing people, people they couldn’t hire five months ago who wouldn’t pay any attention to them. They’re now going to be able to upskill on the digital side, on the engineering side while they at the same time probably tighten their belt on their more traditional staff in GNA or sales and marketing.

On today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast, William Tincup talks to Bert from Protis Global about the consequences of pay transparency.

Some Conversation Highlights:

Certainly, that is the direction that we’re somewhat headed with pay transparency. And when I think about the level of talent, if I have an A player and I don’t have the ability to take my outstanding individuals on my team and find a way to pay them a little bit differently and pay them their value that they’re bringing to the table, due to pay transparency or equal pay, then I believe I’m going to have a problem because… Then if I’m able to then create incentives for the best talent to earn additional money, then what am I doing? Am I creating inequities once again based on the level of talent?

There’s a lot of complexities here and it’s not always what you want to see. I can see jealousy setting in. You have people that will quickly, if there’s a lack of communication, you have people that will… So the pay transparency then allows for jealousy to start to set in. And then if you flip that over, it allows for people to jump and you don’t communicate. If that’s going to be your policy, then you allow people to come to their own conclusions and they may believe that they’re not being paid as well, and perhaps at that point, they’re not going to give you all that they have and be as productive. There’s a lot of dynamics that occur in this.

On today’s episode of the RecruitingDaily Podcast, William Tincup speaks to Mona and Julia from NYU Center for Responsible AI about AI and hiring bias.

Some Conversation Highlights:

AI technology in their professional practice. And so there are, as you say, various types of tools that are used, natural language processing system, various kinds of ranking systems. We can talk about that a little later. All kinds of tools that assist recruiters in either processing or assessing people in high volume recruiting situations or in sourcing situations where they need or they feel they have a need for technology to find that very rare talent that the company needs. Very often, those are technical roles.

Generally. I think that as you identified correctly, we find that AI systems become somewhat what we call infrastructural to the professional practice of recruiting. By that we mean the technology get so deeply embedded in the professional practice in making sense of one’s job, one’s way of doing things that we no longer notice that this is going on until it crashes. Now, recruiters tend to be aware of that and use various tools at the same time in various ways and have practices around double checking AI, for example. But the general trend of AI becoming infrastructural to society I think is something we see not just in recruiting but everywhere, including education, criminal justice, various business processes and so on.
